Title
The Life and Death of Turbulence
Abstract
I propose that turbulence is fruitfully regarded as a problem in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. This perspective predicts turbulent drag scaling behavior & shows that the laminar-turbulence transition is a directed percolation phase transition. Both results have been tested experimentally. Our work connects transitional turbulence with renormalization group theory, high energy hadron scattering, extreme events, & population biology.
