From Complexity to Simplicity: Deconstructing Galaxy Evolution
Abstract
Large-scale surveys of both nearby and very distant galaxies have revealed a number of surprising symmetries within the galaxy population. Starting from these, simple continuity equations can be used to isolate the characteristics of the dominant physical processes involved and to expose the underlying connections between the cosmic evolution of stars, gas and dark matter.
